PUTCO cancels services in parts of Gauteng

Tuesday, June 30, 2015

Pretoria - The Public Utility Transport Corporation (Putco), which runs a bus service for thousands of commuters every day, on Monday announced plans to cancel its services in three Gauteng municipalities.

Pucto Bus Services have indicated to the Gauteng Department of Roads and Transport its intention to cease operations in Tshwane, Ekurhuleni and Sedibeng municipalities, the Gauteng Roads and Transport Department said.

This is with effect from today.

The department said the move has the potential to leave many commuters and residents stranded with no transport operations to get to work or schools.

However, it assured affected commuters that Autopax, a subsidiary of PRASA, will step in to replace Putco on all the subsidised routes within the areas.

During his Budget Vote Speech earlier this year, Transport MEC Ismail Vadi announced the intention to renegotiate subsidised contracts with bus companies in Gauteng and a joint Working Group has been constituted representing various municipalities, bus companies and the department. – SAnews.gov.za
