Public Works wants all employees techno savvy

Pretoria - The Public Works Department wants all its employees, especially those in lower levels, to be brought up to date with technology.

The department has challenged middle and senior management to make computer training available to workers, including cleaners and those who make tea, so they can access work emails.

"My plea to you is make sure that they have skills and that every woman in this department has access to emails by the end of this year," Public Works Minister Gwen Mahlangu said.

She further challenged women working within the department to mentor women in their communities and teach them to read and write.

"... I want you to go to people who have little, they are out there in the village and townships, go and plough back to them," Mahlangu said.

Joined by department's women employees as well as and women around Gauteng province, Mahlangu hosted the Centennial Celebrations of the International Women's Day to acknowledge the economic, political and social achievements of women of the past, present and future.

She called on women to help each other while on their way up and ensure that the department does things smarter and faster for women.

The department's Chief Director of Key Accounts Management, Dr Miranda Mafafo, said that in South Africa, women have gone through difficulties. However, she noted that women have, and continue moving on.

"The fight has been fought and today we are celebrating, you have your rights but the question is what do you do with them, what choices you make for your life, is it about promoting yourself or living a legacy for young women.

"I don't care how much you earn or car you drive, but with the position you are given, you have a responsibility and accountable to this country, you are a public servant and have a responsibility to empower other women," said Mafafo.
