Presiding Officers welcome end to strike

Pretoria - Parliament’s Presiding Officers and their deputies have welcomed the agreement reached between Parliament’s management and the National Education Health and Allied Workers Union (Nehawu).

Members of Nehawu returned to work on Wednesday following an agreement being reached on Tuesday. The agreement ended a week-long strike over a dispute on how bonuses are calculated.

A joint task team has been set up to work on the details of the agreement.

Chairperson of the National Council of Provinces Thandi Modise and Speaker of the National Assembly Baleka Mbete said it was natural that disputes in the labour environment arise from time to time.

“We commend all parties for their maturity and for demonstrating that there is no better way to iron out differences than talking and negotiation. Our shared institutional purpose requires that we work together if we are to continue to deliver on the aspirations of all our people for a better life.

“We are confident that the final outcome of the discussions will enable our institution to continuously live up to that goal,” the Presiding Officers said. – SAnews.gov.za
