Pretoria - President Jacob Zuma has sent condolences to the family and friends of sporting personality Lindiwe Mwelase, who died on Saturday at Steve Biko Hospital after being in a coma for two weeks.

Mwelase was hospitalised two weeks ago, following a boxing match.

“On behalf of government and all South Africans, we wish to convey our earnest condolences to the family, relatives, friends and the entire boxing fraternity.

“The passing of Mwelase is an enormous loss to our sport in general and to boxing in particular. She joined a sport that is viewed as a predominantly male and was proving that women can also succeed in boxing.

“Her untimely passing has robbed us of a role model. May her soul rest in peace,” the President said.

President Zuma has also called on the nation to unite in this difficult moment as the nation is mourning the passing of Mwelase, world iconic athlete Mbulaeni Mulaudzi and Bafana Bafana and Orlando Pirates skipper Senzo Meyiwa.

Mulaudzi died in a fatal crash on Friday, while Meyiwa was shot in an apparent robbery in Vosloorus, east of Johannesburg, while visiting friends on Sunday night. - SAnews.gov.za
