Pretoria - President Jacob Zuma will this evening wrap up a busy Youth Month by attending the opening ceremony of the national schools choral competition at Gallagher Estate in Midrand, says the Presidency.

The Presidency said the 2015 South African Schools Choral Eisteddfod (SASCE) is one of the Department of Basic Education's prestigious events in the annual school calendar, and has been running successfully for 13 years.

“Since 2005 the SASCE has been organised and coordinated as part of the national celebrations and commemorations of national events of historical significance in our democratic country,” said the Presidency.

The month of June is celebrated as Youth Month in South Africa, with a specific focus on 16 June, which is also known as Youth Day. Youth Month pays tribute to the school pupils who lost their lives during the 16 June 1976 uprising in Soweto

Throughout the month, the President, Ministers, Deputy Ministers as well as provincial governments across the country held various programmes aimed at empowering youth. This included the launch of the Presidential Youth Working Group.

Various dialogues with South African youth about the National Youth Policy (NYP), opportunities for youth and entrepreneurship also took place this month. - SAnews.gov.za
