President Zuma ceases inquiry into Nxasana

Pretoria - President Jacob Zuma on Monday ceased the inquiry to determine the fitness of Mxolisi Nxasana to hold office as the National Director of Public Prosecutions, said the Presidency.

“The President had during July 2014 informed Mr Nxasana of his decision to institute an enquiry, in terms of Section 12(6)(a)(iv) of the National Prosecutions Authority Act 32 of 1998, in order to determine his fitness to continue to hold such office,” said the Presidency.

It said President Zuma is currently engaging with Nxasana with a view to taking decisions that are in the best interest of the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), Nxasana and the country at large.

The Presidency said it will communicate the outcome of the deliberations once they have been finalised, mindful of the need for certainty and confidence in the NPA.

In February, President Zuma appointed Advocate Nazeer Cassim as the chairperson of the enquiry. Advocate Lindi Nkosi-Thomas and Advocate Sthembiso Mdladla had been appointed as additional members.

Nxasana was appointed to the position in October 2013. However, his fitness to hold office came under the spotlight after it emerged he did not have the required security clearance for the post, and revelations of a 1985 murder case and a reckless driving charge. He was acquitted on murder charges. - SAnews.gov.za
