Pretoria - President Jacob Zuma will on Friday address the historic Fort Hare centenary celebrations at the Alice campus in the Eastern Cape, says the Presidency.

The Presidency on Tuesday said the celebration will acknowledge the role that the university has played in educating Africans.

“It will celebrate the values and traditions that made the university Africa's most respected institution of higher learning,” said the Presidency.

Alumni from Fort Hare include former President Nelson Mandela, African National Congress (ANC) President Oliver Tambo, Botswana's first democratic President Seretse Khama, Tanzanian President Julius Nyerere, Pan-African Congress leader Robert Sobukwe, the first President of the Republic of Zambia, Kenneth Kaunda and the President of the Republic of Zimbabwe, Robert Mugabe, who is scheduled to grace and address the celebrations as well.

“The event will also coincide with Africa Month to commemorate the founding of the Organisation of African Unity, presently known as the Africa Union, under the theme ‘Building a Better Africa and Better World’,” said the Presidency. - SAnews.gov.za
