President meets with student leaders

Friday, October 23, 2015

Pretoria – President Jacob Zuma will use today’s meeting with student leaders, vice-chancellors and chairpersons of university councils to gain a first-hand account from students about issues that are of concern to them and which affect their capacity to learn.

The President is today meeting with the stakeholders following protests by students across the country against fee increments for next year.

“A proposed increase in university fees has angered students, given the financial difficulties faced by students from poor households. University fees are determined by universities independently of government due to their legal status, which makes these institutions autonomous.

“He will also listen to the leadership of the universities on their views on the matters,” said the Presidency on Friday morning.

Thousands of students are expected to march on the Union Buildings where the meeting is taking place.
