President does attend Parliament

Friday, January 16, 2015

Pretoria - The Presidency has rejected claims that President Jacob Zuma has not been in Parliament since he was interrupted during his question time by Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) MPs on August 21.

“The President attended the delivery of the Medium Term Budget Policy Statement by the Minister of Finance, Nhlanhla Nene on 24 October 2014, in the National Assembly,” his spokesperson Mac Maharaj said on Thursday.

Maharaj said the President also delivered his annual address to the National Council of Provinces on 6 November 2014, which included a debate of the speech by all parties in the NCOP.

Maharaj stressed that the President is not a Member of Parliament and that he goes to Parliament per invitation or for scheduled formal engagements.

“Cabinet and Cabinet committees meet in Cape Town when Parliament is in session and so the President works from Cape Town during parliamentary sessions,” said Maharaj.

The President is expected back in Parliament on February 12 where he is to deliver the State of the Nation Address. - SAnews.gov.za
