Presidency dismisses Finance Minister's "imminent arrest" report

Pretoria - The Presidency has noted weekend media reports alleging the “imminent” arrest of Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan.

A Sunday Times article alleged that Minister Gordhan -- who was reappointed as Minister of Finance in December -- is to be arrested.

The article alleges that the Hawks have handed over a docket to the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) calling for the Minister, amongst others, to be prosecuted for his involvement in the so-called “rogue spy unit” at the South African Revenue Service (SARS).

“The Presidency has noted the story in the Sunday Times alleging the imminent arrest of the Minister of Finance. We have also noted the response of law enforcement agencies which have swiftly denied the rumour.

“It is clear therefore that the story is the work of dangerous information peddlers who wish to cause confusion and mayhem in the country,” said the Presidency on Sunday.

President Jacob Zuma said the Presidency and the whole of government are focused on the goal of reigniting economic growth, preserving existing jobs and creating more jobs through working together with business and labour.

“A lot of progress is being made in this regard, as was seen in the outcomes of the meeting convened by President Zuma last week,” said the Presidency. – SAnews.gov.za
