Pretoria - President Jacob Zuma has sent condolences to the government and the people of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia following the passing of the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques and King of Saudi Arabia, King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz Al-Saud.
“The government and the people of South Africa share the grief of the entire Royal Family as well as the Government and people of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia at this time of bereavement.
“South Africa lauds King Abdullah King for his leadership role and efforts as a peace-maker and mediator, particularly in the Middle East region,” the President said.
South Africa and Saudi Arabia enjoy cordial relations. Diplomatic relations between South Africa and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia were formalised during a visit by former President Nelson Mandela to that country in November of 1994.
African Union Commission (AUC) Chairperson Dr Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma also expressed her sincere condolences to the royal family and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia on behalf of the AUC
She said she learned with profound sadness the death of King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz who died on Thursday at the age of 90.
“The King advocated for women’s rights particularly in the areas of education, political participation and economic independence.
“Under his leadership, Saudi Arabia changed to become more progressive and
