Pres Zuma receives letter from IEC Chair

Pretoria - President Jacob Zuma has received a request for special leave from Advocate Pansy Tlakula, the Chairperson of the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC).

“The President is considering the request and the outcome will be relayed to Advocate Tlakula,” the Presidency said in a statement on Monday.

Tlakula made headlines ahead of the elections after Public Protector Thuli Madonsela found her “guilty of gross maladministration” for the lease agreement of the IEC’s headquarters in Centurion.

Last week, the IEC received the Electoral Court judgement regarding Tlakula.

The Electoral Court recommended that Tlakula be removed from her post.

“The Electoral Commission of South Africa has noted reports of judgement by the Electoral Court in the matter of the United Democratic Movement (UDM) and others versus the Chairperson of the Commission, Advocate Pansy Tlakula.

“The Commission has just received a copy of the judgement of the Electoral Court, which it will study before deciding on any response,” said the IEC in a statement.

This prompted five political parties -- the UDM, African Christian Democratic Party, Congress of the People, Agang SA and Economic Freedom Fighters -- to approach the court to get Tlakula removed for allegedly failing to follow due processes in the procurement of the IEC’s premises. – SAnews.gov.za
