Premier puts Gauteng on the map

Pretoria - Gauteng Premier David Makhura is in Montreal, Canada, where he is leading a delegation to the Association of Major Metropolises’ XII World Congress.

The four-day global event, themed “Global Challenges: “Major Cities in Action, is attended by leaders from big cities around the world.

The congress aims to develop debates among the different, urban management stakeholders through innovative networking. As such, the sessions will see Premier Makhura’s discussions on sustainable development in the context of urban settings.

The provincial government said the key discussion will be on governance models, partnerships in energy efficiencies, managing cities in metropolitan areas and managing water and waste.

“The Premier’s participation will play an important role in creating a strong presence of the provincial government in leading international institutions. This will also present networking opportunities and the promotion of the Gauteng brand in terms of trade and investment,” his office said on Monday.

The Association of Major Metropolises, which was established in 1955, is globally recognised as an organisation that brings cities and metropolitan regions with millions of people together. It works as an international forum, that explores issues and apprehensions that are common in all the major cities, metropolitan governments, regions, provinces and state governments.

It currently represents the authorities of 138 renowned cities and metropolitan areas in Africa, America, Caribbean, Asia, Pacific, and Europe with a vision is to build a network of initiatives among metropolitan governments. – SAnews.gov.za
