Police raid Thembelihle informal settlement

Pretoria - Police have arrested about 50 people following a raid in the early hours of this morning in Thembelihle near Lenasia, south of Johannesburg.

Some of the arrested people include illegal immigrants, those caught in possession of drugs such as dagga and as well as those with illegal and dangerous weapons.

The raid was conducted by police, members of SA Defence Force, metro police and officials from Home Affairs.

Gauteng Police spokesperson Kay Makhubela said the operation had targeted the area as it is regarded as a hotspot for criminal activities.  

The area is a frequent site of violent service delivery protests which has also seen a local police station being torched.

Similar raids, he said, would be conducted in other areas.

The arrested, according to police will appear in court soon. - SAnews.gov.za
