Police in Mido Macia case to reapply for bail

Tuesday, July 30, 2013

Pretoria - The nine police officers implicated in the death of Mozambican national and taxi driver, Mido Macia, will today appear in the Benoni Magistrate’s Court to reapply for bail.

The police officers have been behind bars since Macia’s death. Macia was reportedly dragged by a police van in February, after being confronted by police over a parking violation. He later died in police custody.

The incident, which sparked international condemnation and left the community angry over excessive use of power by police, was recorded in an amateur video that went viral on YouTube.

Meanwhile, the four accused of killing the Johannesburg Central Cluster Commander, Major General Thirani Maswanganyi, will also apply for bail at the North Magistrate's Court today.

The 52-year-old policeman's body was found in June in a bushy area next to the road near Hammanskraal, north of Pretoria. The motive of his murder is still not known. – SAnews.gov.za
