Pretoria – Police in Limpopo have nabbed a gang of six men suspected of planning to hold up staff at a business premises and blowing up an ATM.

The gang’s plan was foiled when an intelligence team -- together with Limpopo provincial police, Mahwelereng Detective Services and the local Tactical Response Team -- arrested the men on the N11 between Steilloop and Mokopane.

The would-be robbers include five South Africans from various parts of the country and one foreign national.

The arrests were carried out after an intelligence driven operation. The suspects were found in possession of three 9mm pistols (serial numbers filed off) with magazines and 19 live rounds; two revolvers (serial numbers filed off) with 10 live rounds and explosives, among others.

The suspects face possible charges of possession of unlicensed firearms and explosives.

“All the firearms will be sent for ballistic testing to determine if they were used in other crimes. The possibility that these suspects may be wanted in connection with other cases cannot be ruled out at this stage,” said Lieutenant General Solomon Makgale. – SAnews.gov.za
