Pretoria - The Phalaborwa Magistrate’s Court has granted bail to a police constable and four others following their arrest for alleged copper theft.

Constable Clarance Nkuna, 33, Benjamin Peter Ndlovu, 32, Davy Ndzeni, 21, Phatudi Malatji, 32, and Calvin Ngobeni, 21, appeared briefly in court on Monday and were granted R2000 bail each.

They were arrested for attempting to smuggle copper to the value of more than R80 000 from the premises of a mine at Phalaborwa.

On Friday, the constable was driving a marked police vehicle with four occupants when they were stopped at a search point.

The five appeared on charges of theft and possession of suspected stolen property.

Their case was remanded to 13 August pending further police investigation.

“Internal processes to charge Constable Nkuna are at an advance stage,” said Limpopo police spokesperson Brigadier Hangwani Mulaudzi. – SAnews.gov.za
