Out on a limb for people with disabilities

East London - Matthew 'Bushy' McKlevey, a biker with disabilities, says he will be "going out on a limb" during an epic journey to raise funds for people with disabilities in South Africa.

In a meeting with Buffalo City Metro Executive Mayor Zukiswa Ncitha earlier this week, McKlevey said the aim of his project, aptly named Out on a Limb, was to create awareness of the plight of people with disabilities.

"I'm a bilateral amputee and the initiator of this project, which involves riding a motorcycle from Durban to the Isle of Man in the United Kingdom. The journey is 28 000km long and we will land in three continents and 28 countries," said McKlevey.

Ncitha met with the team of four bikers earlier this week to pledge her support for the cause by signing a scroll which will give team Right of Entry into the Metro when they return.

"We will do our best to assist you in your cause. Your drive to assist others has touched us as a city," said Ncitha.

The journey is expected to start in February next year and will take 120 days to complete.

The team will leave South Africa, head up towards East Africa, across the Middle East and into Europe, before finally ending up in the Isle of Man.

"The journey will take in cultures and sights off the beaten track in a light travelogue-style, action-adventure that pushes us beyond our comfort levels and most importantly, shows how the disabled in various countries succeed or fail," said McKlevey.

He urged the Metro's community and private sector to support the initiative by visiting the team's website at www.outonalimb.co.za to find out more info about him and his team and to leave messages of support.

"All proceeds from donors will go to helping the disabled," said McKlevey. - BuaNews
