Oscar Pistorius to be released on parole in August

Monday, June 8, 2015

Pretoria – The Department of Correctional Services has confirmed that Oscar Pistorius will be released on parole in August this year.

Correctional Services spokesperson Manelisi Wolela told SAnews that the application for parole was sent through to the Parole Board for recommendation.

“The Parole Board has looked at the submission and recommended his release in August,” he said on Monday.

The blade runner was convicted of culpable homicide, after killing his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp in 2013 and is serving a five-year sentence in Pretoria.

At the time, Pistorius told the court that he shot her thinking she was an intruder.

The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) has indicated that they will be appealing the sentence at the Supreme Court of Appeal in Bloemfontein. The date for the appeal would be set after both the state and defence file their argument.

The appeal against his acquittal on murder charges is due in November. – SAnews.gov.za
