Operation Mayibuye closes in on criminals

Pretoria - Gauteng police have recovered goods worth more than R500 000 and arrested about 60 suspects for various crimes during the weekend's crime prevention operations in the province.

Six shebeens were also closed down and a number of illegal firearms recovered as part of the police's crime prevention campaign, Operation Mayibuye.

Police spokesperson, Lieutenant-Colonel Lungelo Dlamini, said 29 suspects were arrested for possession of illegal firearms.

Seventeen firearms were confiscated from Mondeor, Thembisa, Ivory Park, Protea Glen, Barrage, Muldersdrift, Pretoria Central, Sebokeng, Katlehong, Cleveland and Alberton. 
This included a shotgun that was seized from a security guard in Johannesburg Central and two stolen police guns.

In Johannesburg Central, more than 100 plain clothes police officers patrolled the streets and taxi ranks, Dlamini said.

They arrested 20 suspects for various crimes, including possession of unlicenced firearms, possession of suspected stolen property, dealing in counterfeit goods, and possession of and dealing in drugs.

Laptops, counterfeit clothing, cars and tyres were among the items recovered.

Police operations in Orlando resulted in a significant amount of liquor being seized, six shebeens closed and 12 people arrested.

Those arrested are expected to appear in court today.

Operation Mayibuye is aimed at cleaning up the City of Johannesburg and targets serious crimes, by-law enforcement, hijacked buildings, liquor outlets, illegal trading, second hand goods, illegal security industries, counterfeit goods, littering and cleanliness.
