Wednesday, February 26, 2014

Pretoria - Acting North West Premier Paul Sebegoe has signed a proclamation declaring May 7 as the election date for the North West Provincial Legislature.

This follows the proclamation by President Jacob Zuma to set May 7 as the date of the general election. The proclamation was published in the Government Gazette on Tuesday, February 25.

The provincial proclamation dissolving the provincial legislature was gazetted in terms of Section 108(2) of the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa and Section 18 of the Electoral Act after consultation with the Electoral Commission. It gives effect to the announcement of national and provincial elections made by President Zuma on February 7.

In terms of the two pieces of legislation, election of the provincial legislature has to be held within 90 days of its dissolution.

Members of the Provincial Legislature will remain members until the day of elections, while Members of the Provincial Executive Council (Exco) will remain in office until a new Exco is sworn in after elections.

Other premiers of the provinces also issued proclamations calling and setting May 7 as the date for the provincial legislature elections in their respective provinces.

South African voters will go to the polls on 7 May to cast their votes in the national and provincial elections. - SAnews.gov.za
