Nigel road upgrade project completed

The R16 million P41/1 road rehabilitation project near Nigel has restored the road for a further 15 years.

The Gauteng Department for Roads and Transport said the road works entailed resurfacing, repairing of edge breaks, clearing drainage systems and installing new road markings and safety measures.

Gauteng MEC for Roads and Transport, Ismail Vadi, unveiled the project on Monday.

“The upgraded road improves the link between Nigel/Springs and the N3, and provides direct access to the newly-developed Gibela rail manufacturing factory at Dunnotar that is scheduled to be opened later this year,” MEC Vadi said.

Historically, the road serviced the coal haulage sector in Gauteng. In future, it will play a critical role in servicing the rail manufacturing industry as part of the Gauteng provincial government’s reindustrialisation strategy.

MEC Vadi emphasised that the “upgraded road is a cost-effective facility for road users to travel in safety and comfort, which will facilitate ease of movement, particularly to the Gibela rain manufacturing factory”.

It also empowered local black-owned enterprises that were contracted during the road reconstruction process. – SAnews.gov.za
