New police station makes residents feel safer

Pretoria – The community of Tembisa can now feel safer with the opening of the newly built state-of-the-art Tembisa South police station, in Ekurhuleni.

On Tuesday, Police Minister Nathi Nhleko officially opened the R68 million police station which started operating in July this year.

Minister Nhleko urged community members to forge partnerships with the police in the fight against crime.

“We all need to play a role in the fight against crime to ensure that our communities are safe and protected,” he said.

The Minister appealed to community members to expose criminal activities and those that are involved in such acts.

“Criminals are in our communities and they must be exposed,” he said.

He encouraged the local residents to establish Community Policing Forums in their areas, saying such structures are important in the fight against crime in their communities.

The new police station is the second one in the area.

Speaking at the same event, Gauteng Premier David Makhura urged the community to declare crime as their number one enemy.

“Criminals are very vicious,” he said, adding that they must be exposed so they can be imprisoned where they belong.

Premier Makhura commended the police on the good work they are doing in protecting the community.

“The name of our police must not be tarnished. Corrupt police officers must also be exposed,” the Premier said.

Premier Makhura also told the residents that the provincial government was on a mission to build new schools, hospitals and police stations to ensure effective service delivery.

“We are your servants, we are here to serve you. We can only win the war against crime if communities work with the police,” he said.

The Premier said they will be conducting unannounced visits to all government institutions to get first-hand experience of the kind of services that people are receiving from public servants.

Community member Mandla Makhubo told SAnews that the new police station has brought some relief as they will no longer have to depend on one police station.

“The one police station could not serve us effectively, the area is huge,” he said. – SAnews.gov.za
