New police station for Keimoes

Friday, June 24, 2016

Pretoria – The newly built Keimoes police station has been opened in the Northern Cape.

The new station, which falls within the Upington Cluster, serves an estimated 23 000 citizens.

The acting National Commissioner of the South African Police Service (SAPS), Lieutenant General Kgomotso Phahlane, said the opening of the new police station is part of SAPS’s role in the implementation of the National Development Plan (NDP).

One of the NDP’s goals is to ensure greater access and improvement in the quality of public services, as this is critical to achieving transformation.

“The opening of this state-of-the-art police station is but one facet of improving service delivery. The need for the new police station was identified in 1999 and subsequent engagements led to the building of the station,” he said.

Phahlane urged the local community to work closely with the police by being part of the community policing structures, as this will help to address crimes that are prevalent in the area.

These include assault, theft, housebreaking, stock theft, murder, rape and drug-related crimes.

“We are planning on intensifying our projects, such as drug awareness campaigns, school projects, rural safety awareness and domestic violence campaigns. We will achieve progress by skilling and training our members,” he said.

Phahlane said adapting to new ways of policing in a democratic society is not an event but an ongoing process that is aligned with the contemporary needs of transforming SAPS.

SAPS has opened several police stations in areas where there were no stations. Some of the areas which have just received their own police stations are in KwaZulu-Natal, North West, Gauteng, Mpumalanga and Western Cape.

This morning, SAPS will open another police station in Phola in the outskirts of Ogies in Mpumalanga. - SAnews.gov.za
