New judges appointed

Pretoria - President Jacob Zuma has appointed new judges for the Supreme Court of Appeal and various other High Courts in the country.

"I wish all the judicial officers all the best in discharging their responsibility in this important arm of the state and in furtherance of our Constitutional democracy," Zuma said.

The appointments were made under Section 174 of the Constitution and on the advice of the Judicial Service Commission.

The judges, whose appointments were made mostly on existing vacancies, include:

* Khayelihle Kenneth Mthiyane appointed as Deputy President of the Supreme Court of Appeal, with effect from 1 December 2011
* Chimanlal Narotam Patel as Judge President of the KwaZulu-Natal High Court, Durban, with immediate effect
* Advocate Glenn Graham Goosen SC as a Judge of the Eastern Cape High Court, Grahamstown, with effect from 1 January 2012
* Advocate Johannes Petrus Daffue SC as a Judge of the Free State High Court, Bloemfontein, with effect from 1 January 2012
* Lepono Joshua Lekale as a Judge of the Free State High Court, Bloemfontein, with effect from 1 January 2012
* Advocate Jacqueline Irene Henriques as a Judge of the KwaZulu-Natal High Court, Durban, with immediate effect
* Zaba Philip Nkosi as a Judge of the KwaZulu-Natal High Court, Durban appointed with immediate effect
* Advocate Rashid Abdul Kader Vahed SC as a Judge of the KwaZulu-Natal High Court, Durban, with immediate effect
* Ellem Jacob Francis as a Judge of the South Gauteng High Court, Johannesburg, with immediate effect
* Tshifhiwa Anthony Maumela as a Judge of the North Gauteng High Court, Pretoria, with effect from 30 January 2012
* Advocate Roland Terence Sutherland SC as a Judge of the South Gauteng High Court, Johannesburg, with effect from 30 January 2012
* Mmonoa Jowie Teffo as a Judge of the North Gauteng High Court, Pretoria, with effect from 30 January 2012.

President Zuma has also, in terms of section 153(4) read with section 153(6) of the Labour Relations Act, 1995 (Act No. 66 of 1995), on the advice of the Judicial Service Commission, appointed Advocate Zolashe Mzilikazi Lallie, with effect from 1 January 2012 as a Judge of the Labour Court for a period of 10 years.

He has also appointed, in terms of section 153(4) read with section 153(6) of the Labour Relations Act, 1995 (Act No. 66 of 1995), Hilary Rabkin-Naicker, with effect from 1 January 2012 as a Judge of the Labour Court for a period of 10 years.

In terms of section 19(1) (b) read with section 19(2) of the Electoral Commission Act, 1996(Act No. 51 of 1996), Buyiswa Majiki was appointed as a member of the Electoral Court, with immediate effect in an existing vacancy for a period of five years.
