Friday, November 28, 2014

Pretoria – Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga has received all the provincial infrastructure norms and standards implementation plans and will consider them before making them public.

In terms of the Regulations Relating to Uniform Minimum Norms and Standards for Public School Infrastructure, released on 29 November 2013, the Minister must receive detailed plans on the manner in which the norms and standards are to be implemented.

This happens within a period of 12 months after the publication of the regulations and thereafter annually on a date and in the manner determined by the Minister.

According to the department, this will enable the Minister and the department to determine progress that is made with regard to the implementation of the norms and standards as well as, determine progress with regard to compliance with the timeframes.

The department said Minister Motshekga will closely monitor the process of implementation of the norms and standards contained in the regulations and, when so required, will call for a review thereof, if it is deemed necessary.

The objectives of the regulations are to provide minimum uniform norms and standards for public school infrastructure.

The regulations will also ensure that there is compliance with the minimum uniform norms and standards in the design and construction of new schools and additions, alterations and improvements to schools which exist when the regulations are published; and to provide for timeframes within which school infrastructure backlogs must be eradicated.

“The Department of Basic Education has received plans from all provinces and the Minister will consider the  plans before making them public,” said the department. – SAnews.gov.za
