Pretoria - Cabinet has welcomed the launch of the Media Landscape 2014 which captures various aspects of the inspiring past 21 years in which media have played a critical role.

The Media Landscape 2014: “Celebrating 20 Years of South Africa’s Media”, which was launched last Friday in Johannesburg, reflects on the changes in the media environment and considers how far South Africa has come in this time.

Each chapter considers the media landscape from 1994 and reflects on how far we have come, while considering future challenges.

Acting Cabinet spokesperson Phumla Williams said most of the stakeholders agree that much has been achieved in this discipline.

She said Cabinet has urged those in the media, academia, civil society and government to read Media Landscape 2014, which provokes informed debate and discussion on the 20 years of the media in a democratic South Africa.

The publication offers an objective and honest account of the country’s media sector.

In the drafting process it fostered strong collaboration between government and the media industry, through leaders and civil society organisations.

The book contains chapters from various media experts including William Bird, Shaka Sisulu, Reg Rumney and Professor Tawana Kupe, who discuss the changes that have taken place in the media sector since 1994, and provide a vision for the future.

It aims to stimulate debate around current issues impacting the media environment in South Africa. - SAnews.gov.za
