MEC condemns attacks on train drivers

Pretoria - Gauteng MEC for Roads and Transport Ismail Vadi has expressed concern over reports of violent behaviour, intimidation and incidents of physical attacks by criminals aimed at Metrorail train drivers and guards along the Daveyton-Dunswart rail line.

MEC Vadi said he supported Metrorail's decision to suspend its operations as the safety of drivers and passengers comes first.

"This kind of violence and lawlessness must be condemned in the strongest possible way," he said.

He called on Metrorail drivers, who want to serve the community diligently and with dignity, to continue to do so.

"We urge members of the community, in particular train commuters, to report and work with our law enforcement agencies in bringing to book these criminals.

"The wilful torching and stoning of trains and assaults on train drivers must stop immediately. Otherwise, Metrorail services will remain suspended," said Vadi. – SAnews.gov.za
