Wednesday, October 18, 2017

Gauteng Education MEC Panyaza Lesufi will this morning attend the appearance of the Orlando East Scholar patroller in the Protea North Magistrates Court.

The 57-year-old man is alleged to have sexually assaulted 87 pupils at the AB Xuma Primary School.

The AB Xuma Primary School principal and the entire senior management has since been removed.

An independent body has been appointed to investigate all allegations levelled against the principal and her management team. The department will engage with the School Governing Body to establish reasons why it should not be dissolved.

A series of alleged rape incidents have led to the department reviewing the appointment of process of scholar patrollers.

Mamelodi

The MEC also visited a high school in Mamelodi where a 17-year-old girl was allegedly raped by the school’s security guard. The incident allegedly took place at the school’s matric dance in Bronkhorstspruit on 30 September 2017.

It is alleged that the perpetrator took advantage of the victim who was allegedly under the influence of alcohol, which was reportedly brought to the school by three boys. It was reported that the girl went missing and was found by a teacher who caught the security guard in the act.

“The security guard has since been dismissed. All boy pupils that are alleged to have brought alcohol to the school function must be suspended and the victim should be placed in another school and supported with all study material,” the MEC said.

Benoni

Meanwhile, in Benoni it is alleged that a grade 8 pupil was raped by a grade 10 learner at a school on 14 October 2017.

It is alleged that pupils organized a farewell function outside the schooling environment at a park in Benoni. The grade 8 pupil who is alleged to have been under the influence of alcohol was offered to use a toilet by a boy pupil who resides near the park. The boy then allegedly raped the girl.

A case has been opened and the boy was arrested and released into the parent’s custody.

The school has suspended the boy pending a disciplinary hearing. Counselling was offered to both affected learners. An investigation has been launched into allegations that the boy has also raped another two pupils at the same school. – SAnews.gov.za
