Pretoria - President Jacob Zuma has announced that the Marikana report will be released before the end of June.

“I know and appreciate the anxiety of those who are affected. However, it would be inappropriate for me to just release the report without applying my mind sufficiently,” said the President.

The President received the report and also a subsequent briefing on the findings and recommendations from the Marikana Commission Chairperson, Judge Ian Farlam.

The Commission was appointed in terms of section 84 (2) (f) of the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa, 1996, to investigate matters of public, national and international concern arising out of the events which took place around the Marikana mine in Rustenburg in 2012.

A total of 44 people died during the events and 70 were injured.

The Presidency said earlier that the Commission has made some serious recommendations that require careful consideration. Therefore, it is important for the President to apply his mind carefully.

Tabling the Presidency Budget Vote on Tuesday, President Zuma thanked Judge Farlam and the Commissioners as well as all witnesses who participated and enabled the Commission to carry out its task in this regard.

“I established the Commission because I felt our country needed to know what had happened in Marikana,” said President Zuma. - SAnews.gov.za
