Limpopo police gear up for Easter break

Wednesday, March 27, 2013

Pretoria - Limpopo police are ready for the upcoming Easter weekend, which will see a major influx of people into the province.

“With the expected influx of millions to the traditional Zion Christian Church (ZCC) Moria event, as well as visitors to the various tourist attractions in the province, members of the police will be out in full force, working together with various stakeholders to ensure a safe Easter period for all,” Limpopo police spokesperson Brigadier Hangwani Mulaudzi said on Tuesday.

There will be high police visibility, with roadblocks to be conducted in addition to stop and searches and other crime prevention activities in the province.

However, the Limpopo Commissioner of the South African Police Service (SAPS) Lieutenant General Simon Mpembe has urged the public to work together with police in the fight against crime.

“We will concentrate on police priority areas and criminal activities such as illegal liquor sales – especially to underage individuals, drug dealing, illegal possession of firearms and also tracking wanted criminals,” said Mpembe.

Meanwhile, two foreign nationals arrested for the theft of a rhino horn are to appear in court today.

The two Lephalale farmworkers were arrested after allegedly stealing a rhino horn from their employer’s display cabinet two weeks ago while he was on holiday. They sold it to a “buyer”, who happened to be a police official.

“Further investigations led the police to the employer, who confirmed that the rhino horn was in fact registered under his name. He got it from one of his rhinos that died in 2011. The rhino horn is being kept by the police as evidence,” said Mulaudzi.
