Polokwane - Member of the Inter-Ministerial Committee on elections (IMC), Communications Minister Faith Muthambi, has expressed her satisfaction with Wednesday’s municipal by-elections voting process in Limpopo.

Two by-elections took place in ward 3 of the new municipality currently known as LIM345 and ward 10 of the Polokwane Local Municipality yesterday.

“We visited both ward 3 and 10 in Lim 345 and Polokwane Municipality respectively in the new municipality where the voting process went on smoothly. As the IMC, we are satisfied with the manner in which the IEC, voters and political parties conducted themselves in a satisfactory manner. We are happy about the political tolerance, to us it shows that our democracy is thriving,” the Minister said.

Fifteen municipal ward by-elections will take place in the Eastern Cape, KwaZulu-Natal, Limpopo, Mpumalanga, Northern Cape and Western Cape on Friday.

The by-elections are being contested by 66 candidates representing 16 political parties and two independent candidates.

According to the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC), the results saw all parties retaining the wards they won in the August 3 Municipal Elections, however, with one exception, where the African National Congress (ANC) lost ward 10 to the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) in the Polokwane Municipality.

Ntsako Lauward Ngobeni of the ANC is the new ward councillor of ward 3 in Lim 345, while Jonas Evans Mothapo of the EFF won the seat previously held by the ANC in ward 10 of the Polokwane Municipality. - SAnews.gov.za
