Pretoria - The television series, Breaking New Ground (BNG TV) will kick off its third round of programming on Monday, said the Department of Housing.

The programme which is commissioned by the department educates and shares progress with the nation on the implementation of government's Housing Programme.

"Through BNG TV Series we are sharing with all South Africans progress on the implementation of our housing plan.

"All South Africans can see that we are breaking new ground in housing delivery," explained Head of Media Services at the department, Ndivhuwo Mabaya.

He said the show which boosts of more than two million weekly viewers provides a platform for an informed dialogue among all South Africans while examining the implementation of the government housing policy since 2004.

"On the on the BNG TV series you can see that delivery in action, and most importantly, you can see how this has made a difference in people's lives.

"It is a very important way of communication that facilitates dialogue among all South Africans," Mr Mabaya said.

Hosted by Eric Miyeni, the show has seen some vigorous debates that looks at the achievements of the department and its many partners as they come together to implement the housing programme.

According to the department, the show highlights some of the challenges the new housing policy seeks to address.

It also includes round table discussions where government officials engage with experts in different fields relating to housing and urban planning.

"The show will again focus on individuals who have used their housing opportunity to improve the quality of their own lives," said Mr Mabaya.

So far, the department had built 2.7 million houses, this creating decent accommodation for more than 13 million people over 14 years.

It is hoped that by March 2009, the end of the financial year the number will reach 2.8 million.

From 2004 alone, the department has built 1.2 million houses.

This means that in just fours years it has provided shelter to more than five million people, through partnerships with the private sector, non-governmental organisations and banks that have helped in the acceleration of housing delivery.

Among the highlights of the show will include visits to all housing projects implemented since 2004.

These include Cosmo City, Brickfields and Chief Albert in Gauteng, Duncan Village and Zanemvula in the Eastern Cape, Grasslands in the Free State and Diteneng and Legae La Batho in Limpopo.
