Home Affairs implements measures during power cuts

Pretoria – The Department of Home Affairs says it is taking measures to prevent its services from being interrupted by the current load shedding.

The department said it would provide sufficient capacity generators to ensure systems are able to function when the power goes out. It will also revert to an offline mode system in instances where live-capture systems are down. However, this offline mode will be slower and result in extended turnaround periods.

“We are working closely with our partners, including SITA [State Information Technology Agency], which hosts our data systems and provides the back-end power that enables our live-capture systems to function properly.

“To this end, we will strive to continue rendering services to our clients with minimal interruptions at our frontline offices,” said the department in a statement.

Home Affairs Minister Malusi Gigaba has pleaded for patience, especially as most clients are in need of Home Affairs documentation during the festive season.

“We apologise to all South Africans for the inconvenience and the delays they have experienced while applying for and collecting their documents. We are continuing to work with our service providers to ensure that we are able to meet the demands from the public,” said Minister Gigaba. – SAnews.gov.za
