Govt to appeal judgment regarding President Al-Bashir

Monday, June 29, 2015

Pretoria - Government says it has decided to appeal the recent judgment in the High Court in Pretoria relating to Sudanese President Omar Al-Bashir.

In a statement on Monday, the Government Communication and Information System (GCIS) said the reasons for the appeal will be contained in the affidavit that will be submitted within the prescribed due date.

This follows the International Criminal Court’s (ICC) call for the South African government to fulfil its obligations to the Roman Statute by arresting the Sudanese President after the court issued international warrants against him for human rights violations in his country.

Earlier this month, the President was in South Africa to attend the 25th African Union Summit in Johannesburg. He left the country in contradiction of a court order.

South Africa has decided to review its participation in the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court, after it noted contradictions in various articles in the Rome Statute of the ICC on indemnity for Heads of State. - SAnews.gov.za
