Pretoria - Government has welcomed the South Gauteng High Court sentencing of Mokolo Molekoa, a former member of the South African Police Force.
Molekoa was sentenced to 284 years plus five life terms in jail, after being found guilty of 16 charges of rape. He was also convicted of other charges including kidnapping and robbery.
Acting GCIS spokesperson Phumla Williams said: “Government commends the judicial system and law enforcement agencies for their dedication and work on this case.
“The sentencing serves as a deterrent that criminal activities, including crimes that are committed by law enforcement officials, will not be tolerated in South Africa.
“Our courts deal harshly with perpetrators found guilty of violence, including sexual violence."
Government has put in place systems such as the Constitution, supporting legislation, policies and programmes aimed at fighting crime in our country.
“Combatting crime and the scourge of women and children abuse is a priority of government.
“This sentencing further reiterates that government will not allow women abuse and gender violence to define who we are and what we stand for as a country,” said Williams.
Government encourages communities to play their part by reporting any criminal activity, even those of civil servants, to their local police station. “By working together we can do more,” said Williams. – SAnews.gov.za
