Pretoria - Steady progress is being made with regards to the construction of the Medupi coal fired power station in Limpopo, Eskom said on Thursday.

“The burner commissioning programme has virtually been completed and plans are to put the first mill in service this week. What follows thereafter is the commencement of the blow-through process,” said the power utility.

In its construction update, Eskom said that several milestones have been reached on the station’s Unit 6.

“To date the unit has been generating steam of quite some quantity whilst the commissioning of the burners is in progress. The work in progress has seen the first strainers being blocked as the debris is being removed from the pipework. The whole team remains focused on the final activities of completing blow through, steam pipework restoration, ACC steam cleaning, protection tests, steam to set and synchronisation,”  said Eskom.

The utility said it is working around the clock to deliver Unit 6 with the December deadline remaining “clear in everyone’s mind”.
