Pretoria - President Jacob Zuma has signed a proclamation authorising the Special Investigating Unit (SIU) to investigate certain matters regarding the affairs of the Independent Development Trust, the Department of Basic Education and the Department of Education in the Free State.

The Presidency on Thursday said the proclamation was signed in terms of section 2 (1) of the Special Investigating Unit and Special Tribunals Act, 1996.

The proclamation authorises the SIU to investigate allegations such as serious maladministration in connection with the affairs of the Independent Development Trust (IDT), Department of Basic Education (DBE) and Department of Education in the Free State (DEFS).

Other allegations that the SIU is authorised to be probed include procurement of and contracting for goods, work or services by or on behalf of the IDT, DBE or DEFS and payments made in a manner that was not fair, competitive, transparent and or contrary to applicable legislation.

The Presidency said the SIU is also authorised to probe improper and unlawful conduct by officials or employees of the IDT, DBE or DEFS; unlawful appropriation or expenditure of public money or property; unlawful, irregular and unapproved acquisitive act, transaction, measure or practice having a bearing on State property; and intentional or negligent loss of public money or damage to public property. - SAnews.gov.za
