Pretoria – Five houses were destroyed and 52 people have been treated for smoke inhalation after a fire broke out in Muizenberg, Cape Town.
Cape Town Disaster Risk Management spokesperson Onele Ndesi said more than 100 people have been evacuated from their homes and three old age homes.
He said the fire started on Sunday afternoon but was contained and flared up at around 2.30am.
Mass care centres have been opened at two churches and at the Fish Hoek Community Hall to house the people affected.
Twenty-eight fire-fighting vehicles, 16 supporting vehicles, four helicopters and 50 volunteers were on the scene.
Some roads are closed including Chapman's Peak Drive, Boyes Drive and Ou Kaapse Weg.
Ndesi advised residents in the area to close windows, wet their gardens and thatch roofs.
The fire was heading towards Boyes Drive over Ou Kaapse Weg and towards Chaplin’s Peak in the direction of Hout Bay. – SAnews.gov.za
