Eskom continues to load shed

Pretoria – Eskom says it will continue to implement load shedding today until the evening.

Eskom implemented stage two load shedding on Saturday, which stopped at 09:42pm. Today’s load shedding started at 8am and it’s likely to continue until 10pm.

The power utility switched from stage two to stage one load shedding at noon. This, it said, was due to having managed to build the necessary reserves.

The power utility, however, warned that the electricity supply system remains very vulnerable due to a shortage of generation capacity, as several units are currently out of service due to planned and unplanned outages.

“We are using the weekend to build up diesel stocks and dam water levels for open-cycle gas turbines (OCGTs) and pumped storage schemes respectively. We sincerely apologise for the inconvenience to affected customers,” Eskom said in a statement.

Eskom urged all South Africans to become part of the solution by making a concerted effort to reduce their electricity usage and thus limit the severity of load shedding.

“Businesses and households can make a difference by implementing saving measures in their processes and daily lives. We would like to thank electricity users for responding to our messages to save. We see a reduction that makes a difference in the power system.” – SAnews.gov.za
