Pretoria - Public Enterprises Minister Lynne Brown has requested Eskom CEO Brian Molefe to investigate an incident in which Members of Parliament gained entry to Eskom premises in Johannesburg.
The MPs, who belong to an opposition party - as well as their 30 supporters - gained unlawful entry to Eskom’s Megawatt Park offices on Wednesday using the entry card of a party sympathiser.
They then demanded to be addressed by Molefe, who according to the Department of Public Enterprises, diffused the situation by receiving a memorandum from them.
Minister Brown condemned the incident.
“Members of Parliament should be conversant with the laws governing protests. Acting in a legal and responsible manner would have required them to request permission from the relevant authorities and notify Eskom before embarking on this reckless action.
“One expects more from elected representatives of South Africa. Eskom’s Chief Executive Officer has worked hard to build the morale at Eskom. Mr Molefe has increased maintenance and has done an excellent job to stabilise the grid.
“I have requested Eskom’s Chief Executive Officer to investigate this incident and ensure that measures are put in place to avoid a repeat of this kind of incident. We cannot have a situation where people just arrive at Eskom and demand to be seen by the Chief Executive Officer.”
Minister Brown also commended Eskom staff for the strategic role they are playing in supplying electricity to the citizens and businesses of South Africa. – SAnews.gov.za
