Cape Town: Western Cape Deputy Provincial Commissioner of Police Anwar Dramat has been named as the new Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (DPCI) head.

The new elite crime fighting unit, which replaces the former Directorate for Special Operations, popularly known as the Scorpions, will come into operation on 1 July.

Introducing the new head, Police Minister Nathi Mthethwa said Mr Dramat had been in command structures since 1995 and his expertise lay in crime intelligence and underground operative work.

Mr Dramat has been instrumental in the fight against gangsterism in the Western Cape.

"We wanted someone familiar with law enforcement agencies, who has an understanding of organized crime; somebody who has proven himself to be committed to the fight against crime," the minister said.
