Ekurhuleni remembers OR Tambo

Sunday, October 23, 2016

Pretoria – President Jacob Zuma is expected to lead this year’s edition of the O.R. Tambo wreath-laying ceremony in Wattville, Benoni.

“It [will be] a great honour to host President Jacob Zuma at such an auspicious event. His presence will elevate the wreath-laying ceremony and it also accords Oliver Tambo the respect he deserves for the role he played in driving the agenda of a non-racial, non-sexist, democratic and prosperous South Africa,” said Ekurhuleni Mayor Mzwandile Masina.

Every year during the month of October, which is Tambo’s birthday month, the City of Ekurhuleni leads a commemoration of the life and times of Tambo, who remains the longest serving president of the ANC.

The month-long activities include student debates, a choral music festival and an exhibition.

Tambo, who is a Freeperson of Ekurhuleni along with his wife Dr Adelaide Tambo and Chris Hani, would be turning 99 this year.

Celebrations this year are being held under theme ‘Celebrating the life, times and legacy of O.R Tambo, 99 years and counting towards the centenary’.

The wreath-laying ceremony is expected to draw high level dignitaries from national and provincial government, Mbizana, O.R. Tambo and Alfred Nzo municipalities. – SAnews.gov.za
