Dti to host Company Law Symposium

Pretoria – An upcoming Company Law Symposium is expected to discuss and consider important principles arising from the Companies Act, including mergers and acquisitions, among other things.

The Department of Trade and Industry in partnership with the Specialist Committee on Company Law (SCCL) will on Tuesday host the two-day Company Law Symposium at Emperors Palace, Kempton Park.

The symposium will also discuss fundamental transactions, directors and prescribed officer’s duties and responsibilities.

Trade and Industry Minister Dr Rob Davies said the symposium will highlight the provisions of the Company Act which are considered important to the economy.

“The symposium will zoom into areas of the Act that impact on small businesses and support structures, share statistics and comparisons on mergers and acquisitions. The symposium will also discuss social and ethics committee in light of the corporate governance issues arising from time to time,” he said.

Minister Davies said there will be interactive discussions on the comparative company law and principles applicable in South Africa and the United States.

The Company Law Symposium will be attended by businesses, law practitioners, government officials and other stakeholders and organisations affected by the Companies Act of 2008.

The SCCL is a statutory body established under the Company Act of 2008 and part of its function is to advise the Minister on the implementation of the Company Act. - SAnews.gov.za
