Tuesday, November 17, 2015

Pretoria - Communications Minister Faith Muthambi has urged residents of Nyandeni and the surrounding villages outside Mthatha in the Eastern Cape to participate in the digital migration campaign so that they can be informed on the latest developments.

Minister Muthambi and her digital terrestrial television (DTT) team are expected to be in Zibungu Sports Ground in Nyandeni, on Saturday, as part of the nationwide DTT awareness campaign, aimed at informing consumers about digital migration and how it will impact their lives.

“As government, we are appealing to residents of Nyandeni and the surrounding areas to come to our campaign in their numbers to seek more information about digital migration.

“Our campaign is in the interest of all television viewers. They must take advantage of this television revolution campaign to gain insights on digital migration, as this will also enable them to understand the importance of set-top boxes for this project,” Minister Muthambi said.

On Saturday, Minister Muthambi is expected to be accompanied by Eastern Cape Premier Phumulo Masualle.

The Department of Communications has embarked on a nationwide campaign known as Go Digital South Africa to raise awareness and support for the roll-out of the broadcasting digital migration project.

The campaign is aimed at creating awareness about digital migration, its benefits, processes and requirements in preparation for the implementation of its roll-out.

“The digital migration project is not only about television services; it has many potential spill-over benefits. Government is committed to ensuring that all economic opportunities resulting from this project are explored and fully exploited to the benefit of South Africans, especially young people.

“Electronic manufacturers and producers of broadcasting content are just some of the sectors that stand to benefit," said Minister Muthambi.

The department’s entities such as the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC), Independent Communications Authority of South Africa (ICASA), Media Development and Diversity Agency (MDDA), Film and Publication Board (FPB) and Brand SA will also be part of the campaign.

The South African Post Office will also be on site to explain the registration process for set-top boxes.
