Dept welcomes latest on labour act amendments

Tuesday, August 19, 2014

Pretoria - The Department of Labour has welcomed President Jacob Zuma’s approval of legislative amendments to the Labour Relations Act.

Following lengthy discussions with social partners, the President on Sunday assented to the Labour Relations Amendment Act, 2004 (Act No.6 of 2014), in terms of section 84(2)(a) of the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa.

The act aims to promote economic development, social justice, labour peace and democracy in the workplace. It also seeks to respond to the increased informalisation of labour to ensure that vulnerable groups are adequately protected and are employed in conditions of decent work.

The act applies to all employers, workers, trade unions and employers’ organisations.

Thembinkosi Mkalipi, the Acting Deputy Director-General for Labour Market Policy, said the department was happy that the President accepted the law.

“What the department is doing following this step is to finalise all the regulations that go with the newly-signed law before it is promulgated,” said Mkalipi.

He said the department would then approach the President with the hope that it will be signed before the beginning of October. – SAnews.gov.za
