Dept grants schools extra two days holiday

Wednesday, April 13, 2011

Pretoria - The Department of Basic Education has given permission to schools across the country to take two days off on April 28 and 29 as part of Easter holidays.

According to the schools' calendar, the two days are not part of the school holidays. However Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga said the department had received requests from schools to be allowed to take the two extra days for Easter.

"The planning was disruptive and the schools asked to be allowed to take two days and compensate those days during June or September holidays," Motshekga said.

The department's Director-General, Bobby Soobrayan, also acknowledged that the school calendar was disruptive, but emphasised that the two days will be compensated and schools had made a commitment to this.

"We can't expect learners, especially those staying in hostels to leave for Easter Holidays and come back for two days and leave again for another holiday. In future, we will ensure that we keep an eye on potential disruptions," Soobrayan said. - BuaNews
