Pretoria - Cabinet says hosting the 21st International Aids Conference will advance the country’s HIV and Tuberculosis response, while making an impact on one of the most important challenges in the world.
Cabinet has approved the co-hosting of the conference (AIDS 2016) between government and the International Aids Society, which will be held at Inkosi Albert Luthuli International Convention Centre (ICC) in Durban.
“This conference will provide a platform for researchers from across the world to share the latest scientific advances in the field, to learn from one another’s expertise and to develop strategies for advancing all facets of our collective efforts to treat and prevent HIV,” Cabinet said.
The five-day conference will start on 18 July 2016 and will be held under the theme, Access Equity Rights Now.
It is a call to action to work together and reach the people who still lack access to comprehensive treatment, prevention, care and support services.
The Aids conference is among the three important international conferences to be hosted by South Africa this year. The country will from 24 September to 5 October host the 17th Conference of Parties (COP17) to CITES at the Sandton Convention Centre in Johannesburg. It will also host the 35th International Geological Congress from 27 August to 4 September. – SAnews.gov.za
