Condolences to Attenborough's family

Pretoria - President Jacob Zuma has sent condolences to the family and friends of Sir Richard Attenborough, who died on Sunday.

The President received with sadness the news of the passing away of the British actor and film director, Attenborough, who died at the age of 90.

"We wish to express our deepest condolences to the Attenborough family at this hour. This distinguished film-maker has made a significant contribution to our struggle and history through his work and we shall be eternally grateful. May his soul rest in peace," said President Zuma.

In April this year, the late Attenborough was awarded the National Order of the Companions of OR Tambo at the National Orders ceremony.

He has also received an Academy Award in 1982 for directing and producing Cry Freedom, a film about the death of South African anti-apartheid campaigner and Black Consciousness leader Steve Biko. - SAnews.gov.za
