Communal Property Bill gets the nod

Wednesday, April 20, 2016

Pretoria – Cabinet last week approved the Communal Property Association Amendment Bill of 2016.

Cabinet says the amendment bill will promote democratic governance and sustained use of communal land administered by Community Property Associations on behalf of communities. The bill will also enable communities to acquire, hold and manage properties through administration entities supported by government.

The implementation of the bill is expected to further strengthen the rights of individuals living within communal areas.

The amendment introduces an administrative process of ensuring that the actions of property associations are in line with proper governance.

Officials have called on people who live on communal land to familiarise themselves with the amended bill.

The amendment bill also dictates that all communal property associations been listed with a registrar to enforce accountability and oversight. The national registrar will be supported by provincial offices that would be situated near where these communal properties are found. – SAnews.gov.za
